The client

Ghana Peace Journal reports on defence, security and peace-related news in Ghana. Alongside its website, it wanted a dedicated mobile app for its regular readers.

The problem

Readers who follow the journal closely had to visit the website to check for new stories. The journal needed an app that delivered new articles quickly, let readers focus on the topics they care about, alerted them to important stories, and stayed usable when mobile data was unavailable or expensive.

Our approach

We built an Android app connected to the journal's content. Around that we designed category browsing, a customisable feed, push notifications and offline reading, and published the app on Google Play.

How our approach solved it

  1. Problem 1

New stories only reached readers who remembered to check the website.

    How we solved it

An Android app connected to the journal's content, published on Google Play, so new articles are on readers' phones as soon as they are published.

  2. Problem 2

Readers interested in particular topics had to scroll past everything else.

    How we solved it

A customisable newsfeed where readers choose the topics and categories they want to see, plus simple category browsing and bookmarks.

  3. Problem 3

Important and breaking stories could be missed.

    How we solved it

Push notifications for breaking news and featured articles.

  4. Problem 4

Readers without mobile data could not read the journal.

    How we solved it

Offline reading: saved articles stay readable without an internet connection.

What we delivered

  • Customisable newsfeed. Readers choose topics and categories to see the stories that matter to them.
  • Push notifications. Alerts for breaking news and featured articles.
  • Offline reading. Saved articles remain readable without an internet connection.
  • Simple navigation. An intuitive interface for browsing categories and bookmarking stories.

The result

Ghana Peace Journal's readers can install the app from Google Play and follow its reporting on Android phones. We also built the journal's website. We have not published performance figures for this project.
