Social Media Engagement Rate Calculator

The engagement rate calculator works out how much people interact with your social media posts. Enter each post's likes, comments, shares, saves and clicks with its reach, views or impressions and followers, then choose a formula. It shows every post's engagement rate, the average and the overall rate, explains the formula, draws the trend and notes what each platform reports. It runs in your browser.

Engagement Rate Calculator

Formula

Instagram: Meta reports Views instead of impressions: the number of times content appeared on screen or was played, including repeat views. Reach counts unique accounts that saw it. Likes, comments, shares and saves are reported per post, so the reach and views formulas both work.

Count as engagement

Use the same choices for every post you compare. Some platforms count clicks as engagement (LinkedIn does).

Your numbers stay in your browser: nothing is sent to our server or stored.

How to use the Engagement Rate Calculator

  1. 1 Choose the platform to see which numbers it reports.
  2. 2 Choose a formula: by reach, by views or impressions, or by followers.
  3. 3 Choose which interactions count as engagement.
  4. 4 Enter each post's numbers from the platform's insights, and add posts to compare.
  5. 5 Calculate, then read the average, the trend and the table, or download a CSV.

What it does

  • Engagement rate by reach, by views or impressions, and by followers
  • You choose what counts: likes, comments, shares, saves and clicks
  • Compare up to 20 posts, with the average and the overall rate
  • A trend chart and a table of every post by every formula
  • Notes on what Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, X and YouTube report
  • CSV download, and print or PDF

Useful for social media managers comparing posts, business owners checking what works and agencies reporting to clients.

Limitations

  • A rate is only as good as the numbers entered: copy them from the platform's own insights, for the same period for every post.
  • Platforms define views, reach and interactions differently, so compare rates within one platform rather than between platforms.
  • We do not publish 'good' engagement benchmarks: rates vary with the platform, audience, format and goal, and published benchmarks change often.
  • It does not connect to your accounts; nothing is fetched from the platforms.

The three formulas

Engagement rate compares the interactions a post received with the number of people or views it could have received them from. The calculator gives all three common versions:

Formula Calculation Best for
By reach engagements ÷ reach × 100 How engaging a post was for the people who saw it
By views or impressions engagements ÷ views or impressions × 100 Platforms that report impressions or views rather than reach
By followers engagements ÷ followers × 100 Comparing accounts of different sizes

Engagements are the interactions you choose to count. Likes (or reactions), comments, shares and saves are the usual set. Clicks are optional: LinkedIn counts them in its own engagement rate, and X counts clicks anywhere on a post as engagements, so include them if you want to match those platforms’ figures.

Average versus overall rate

When you compare several posts, the calculator shows two summaries. The average gives each post equal weight: a post seen by 300 people counts as much as one seen by 30,000. The overall rate adds up all the engagements and divides by the total reach (or views or followers), so bigger posts weigh more. If the two differ a lot, a few posts with very different reach are pulling the average around: look at the table.

What each platform reports

Platforms do not use the same words or count the same things. Meta now reports Views instead of impressions on Instagram and Facebook, including repeat views, while reach counts unique accounts. LinkedIn reports impressions and members reached, and divides interactions, including clicks, by impressions. TikTok reports video views and, in its creator reporting, divides interactions by views. YouTube Studio shows impressions, views and unique viewers, and subscribers rather than followers. The calculator shows the relevant note when you choose a platform.

Because of these differences, no single formula fits every platform, and a “good” rate on one platform says little about another. Compare your posts with each other, on the same platform, with the same formula.

Reading your results

  • Look for patterns, not single posts. Which formats, topics or days sit above your average? Plan more of those in your content calendar.
  • Check the trend chart. A falling line over several weeks is a sign to change the mix; a single dip is usually noise.
  • Connect engagement to results. Engagement shows interest, not sales. Tag links with the UTM builder to see which posts send visitors, and use the ad campaign ROI calculator for paid campaigns.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate engagement rate?

Add up the interactions you count (for example likes, comments, shares and saves), divide by the post's reach, its views or impressions, or your followers, and multiply by 100. A post with 173 engagements that reached 2,400 accounts has an engagement rate by reach of 173 ÷ 2,400 × 100 = 7.21%.

Should I use reach, impressions or followers?

Hootsuite calls engagement by reach the most common formula, because it measures people who actually saw the post. LinkedIn and X divide by impressions in their own analytics, and TikTok's creator reporting divides by video views. Followers suits comparing accounts of different sizes but ignores how many people saw the post. Whichever you choose, use it every time.

What is a good engagement rate?

There is no single figure. Rates differ by platform, audience size, industry, format and goal, and each platform counts interactions in its own way. The most useful comparison is with your own earlier posts, using the same formula and the same interactions each time.

Why is my engagement rate over 100%?

It happens when people interact more than once (liking and commenting, for example) and the reach or views are small, or when the numbers cover different periods. Check that the interactions and the reach or views come from the same post and period.

Does Instagram still show impressions?

Meta replaced impressions with Views on Instagram and Facebook in 2024. Views count the times content appeared on screen or was played, including repeat views, so enter them in the views or impressions field. Reach still counts unique accounts.
