eCommerce Platform Comparison for Ghana

The eCommerce platform comparison scores Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix, Qalleo and a custom-built store against your answers to eight questions: budget, skills, Mobile Money, products, custom features, maintenance, sales channels and currencies. Each score shows the reasoning per criterion, and each platform's profile links to the provider's own pages. It is for businesses in Ghana choosing where to build an online shop.

eCommerce Platform Comparison

Answer eight questions about your business. Each answer sets how much a criterion counts; each platform's verified profile sets how well it fits. Every value links to the provider's own page.

Platform profiles and sources

Your answers are scored in your browser. Nothing you choose is sent to our server or stored.

How to use the eCommerce Platform Comparison

  1. 1 Answer the eight questions about your budget, team, payments, products and sales channels.
  2. 2 Press Compare platforms to see a score out of 100 for each option.
  3. 3 Read the criterion-by-criterion table and the reasoning to see why each platform scored as it did.
  4. 4 Open each platform's profile to check the facts on the provider's own pages before you decide.

What it does

  • Weights that follow your answers, shown with the reason for each
  • A fit for every platform and criterion, explained in plain language
  • Mobile Money and Ghana payment options checked on the providers' own pages
  • Hosting, setup effort, customisation, inventory, integrations, data export and cost model
  • Every value linked to its official source, with the date it was checked
  • Values that could not be verified are marked as such, never guessed

Useful for businesses in Ghana starting an online shop, sellers moving from social media to their own store and managers comparing quotes for an eCommerce website.

Limitations

  • The scores reflect your answers and the profiles' verified facts. They are not a review, a ranking of quality or a recommendation of any provider.
  • Prices are not copied, because they change and can differ by country. Follow each link to the provider's pricing page.
  • Providers change their features and payment options. Check what matters most with the provider before you commit.
  • Only the options most relevant to sellers in Ghana are included.

How the comparison works

Each of your answers sets how much a criterion counts, from 0 (does not matter to you) to 3 (matters most). For example, Mobile Money counts 3 if you say it is essential and 0 if you do not need it. The technical skills needed count 3 if your team has none and will run the store itself. Each platform then gets a fit for every criterion from its profile: 1 for a good fit, 0.5 or 0.75 for a partial fit, 0.25 for a weak fit, and 0 for a poor fit or a value we could not verify.

Score = the sum of (weight × fit), divided by the sum of the weights, shown out of 100.

Scalability is shown but not scored, because the only figures available are the providers’ own statements. A platform with “Not verified” values may still do what you need. It means the provider’s pages did not say so when we checked, so ask the provider.

The criteria

  • Payments in Ghana: whether the provider’s own pages state Mobile Money for Ghana, or only that a Ghana payment provider is available. Paystack says its Mobile Money channel is available in Ghana (MTN, AirtelTigo and Telecel), and Hubtel’s Online Checkout accepts Mobile Money, cards and GHQR.
  • Cost model: a subscription, free software plus hosting, a free plan with paid upgrades, or a one-off project. Prices are not copied, so check each pricing page.
  • Technical skill and setup effort: hosted builders such as Shopify, Wix and Qalleo say no coding is needed. WooCommerce needs WordPress on hosting that meets its server requirements. A custom store is built for you as a project.
  • Hosting, customisation and integrations: who runs the hosting, how far you can change the design and features, and whether there is an app or extension marketplace.
  • Multi-currency and inventory: whether prices can be shown in several currencies, and how stock is tracked. Several multi-currency features depend on payment products that are not offered in Ghana.
  • Ownership and portability: whether you can export your products, customers and orders if you move.

Reading your result

Look at the criteria with the highest weights first. A small difference in score matters less than a “poor fit” on something you marked essential. Then open the platform’s profile and follow the links to confirm the details. Once you have a shortlist, use the eCommerce profit calculator and enter each platform’s subscription and fees as costs. The online store readiness checker covers everything else you need before launch.

About the custom-built option

Phoot Technologies publishes this tool, and the custom-built profile describes our own eCommerce website service from our published pages. It is scored with the same rules as every other option. If an off-the-shelf platform fits your answers better, it will rank higher.

Frequently asked questions

Which eCommerce platforms accept Mobile Money in Ghana?

On the providers' own pages: Paystack's official WooCommerce plugin lists Mobile Money for Ghana; Wix lists Paystack for Ghana, and its Paystack help page lists Mobile Money; Qalleo's site says it accepts Mobile Money. Paystack's Shopify app lists Ghana, but the listing does not mention Mobile Money. A custom-built store can connect to a provider such as Paystack or Hubtel directly.

Is Shopify Payments available in Ghana?

No. Ghana is not on Shopify's list of supported countries for Shopify Payments, so stores in Ghana use a third-party provider. Shopify's help centre says third-party transaction fees apply to payments through third-party providers, at a rate that depends on your plan.

Is WooCommerce free?

The WooCommerce plugin is free and has no monthly subscription. You pay for the hosting your WordPress website runs on, any paid extensions, and your payment provider's fees.

Why is Squarespace not included?

Squarespace Payments is not offered in Ghana, Squarespace says it does not support Stripe's Paystack-powered African network, and the Ghanaian cedi is not one of its listed store currencies. None of its payment options is confirmed for sellers based in Ghana.

When does a custom-built store make sense?

When you need features a standard platform does not offer, integrations with your own systems, or full control over the design and checkout, and you have a project budget. It costs more to build and needs a developer for changes.

Can I move my store to another platform later?

Usually, if you can export your data. Shopify and Wix export products, customers and orders as CSV files. WooCommerce runs on your own hosting and exports products to CSV. Check what a provider exports before you build a large catalogue.
