Meta Tag and SERP Preview Tool
The SERP preview tool shows roughly how your page title and meta description may appear in search results on desktop and mobile. It measures each one's width, flags text that is likely to be shortened, suggests simple improvements and writes the matching meta, Open Graph and X card tags for you to copy. It is for anyone who edits web pages, and it runs entirely in your browser.

SERP Preview
Desktop result (approximate)
Mobile result (approximate)
These previews are our own approximation, not Google's design. Google shortens titles and snippets to fit the device width, so what counts is how wide the text is, not its character count. Widths are measured in a common sans-serif font against estimated limits (about 561 px for titles and 985 px for descriptions, as used by SEO tools). Google may also rewrite titles and snippets, for example from the page's headings or content.
Suggestions
Type a title and description to see suggestions.
Paste these into the <head> of the page, or give them to your developer. Values are escaped so quotes and symbols are safe.
Everything is processed in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to our server or saved.
How to use the SERP Preview
- 1 Type or paste the page title, the meta description and the page address.
- 2 Add the main keyword and your site name if you want keyword and branding checks.
- 3 Compare the desktop and mobile previews and read the suggestions.
- 4 Add a share image for social networks, then copy or download the generated tags.
What it does
- Approximate desktop and mobile search result previews that update as you type
- Character counts and an estimated pixel width for the title and description
- Checks for length, keyword position, repeated words, capitals and vague titles
- Optional tidy-up suggestions made from simple rules in your browser (no AI)
- Title, meta description, canonical, Open Graph and X (Twitter) card tags, safely escaped
- Copy the tags or download them as an HTML file
Useful for website owners editing their own pages, marketers and content writers and developers adding meta tags.
Limitations
- The previews and widths are estimates. Google's layout, fonts and limits change, differ by device and are not published.
- Google may show a different title or snippet from the one you write, for example one taken from the page's headings or content.
- Writing a good title and description can help people choose your page, but it does not guarantee a ranking.
- The tool cannot check what is live on your page. Use the SEO checker to read a published page's tags.
What a search result is made of
A typical result shows your site name and address, a title link and a snippet of text. You suggest the title with the page’s <title> element and the snippet with its meta description, but Google decides what to show. Its documentation says title links come from several places, including the <title> element, the page’s main heading, og:title and links pointing to the page. Snippets come mainly from the page’s content and change with each search; your meta description is used when it describes the page better.
So the aim is not to “fill” a character limit. It is to write a title and description that are accurate, specific and readable, so that Google is happy to use them and searchers are happy to click.
Why width matters more than characters
Google says there is no length limit on titles or meta descriptions, but both are shortened “to fit the device width”. A title of capital Ws is far wider than one of lower-case i’s with the same number of characters, so this tool measures the pixel width of your text in a common sans-serif font, as SEO tools do. It compares the result with the limits the Screaming Frog SEO Spider uses (about 561 px for titles and 985 px for descriptions) and also shows the character count. Treat both as guides: real results vary by device, language and the words people search for.
Writing a better title
- Describe the page. Google advises against vague titles such as “Home” and long titles that differ by one word from page to page.
- Lead with what matters. If the title is shortened, the start is what people see. “Web design in Accra | Example Studio” survives a cut better than “Welcome to Example Studio, where we offer web design in Accra”.
- Don’t repeat yourself. Repeating the same keyword (“Shoes, cheap shoes, best shoes”) can look spammy, and Google says so.
- Brand it briefly. Google suggests adding your site name at the start or end, separated by a hyphen, colon or pipe.
- Keep it accurate and current. Inaccurate titles and out-of-date ones (for example, with last year’s date) are among the cases Google lists for rewriting.
A study by Zyppy of more than 80,000 titles found that very short titles and titles over about 70 characters were the most likely to be rewritten, while titles of 51–55 characters were rewritten least often.
Writing a better meta description
Write one or two sentences for a person, not a list of keywords. Say what the page offers and why it is useful: a service and its area, a product and its price, an article and what it answers. Give every important page its own description; identical descriptions across a site don’t help searchers choose.
Tags for sharing
When someone shares your link, platforms that support the Open Graph protocol (it was created at Facebook) read its tags (og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url, og:type) and, on X, card tags (twitter:card and friends). This tool writes both sets from the same title and description. Use a full https:// address for the share image, and describe the image in the alt field.
Next steps
Once the tags are live, run the SEO checker on the published page and the website speed test to see how it performs. If you share the page in campaigns, tag the links with the UTM link builder. For help with content and search, see our digital marketing and website design and development services.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a page title be?
Google sets no length limit, but it shortens titles in results to fit the device width. SEO tools therefore measure width: Screaming Frog's SEO Spider flags titles over about 561 pixels or 60 characters, and a Zyppy study recommends 50–60 characters. Put the most important words first so a shortened title still makes sense.
How long should a meta description be?
Google says there is no limit on how long a meta description can be; the snippet is shortened as needed to fit the device width. Screaming Frog flags descriptions over about 985 pixels or 155 characters. One or two clear sentences that summarise the page usually work well.
Why does Google show a different title from the one I wrote?
Google builds title links from several sources: the title element, the main heading, og:title, other prominent text and links to the page. It may replace a title that is too long, out of date, inaccurate, repetitive or missing. A clear, accurate and current title makes this less likely.
Why doesn't Google use my meta description?
Google mainly creates snippets from the page's content and tailors them to each search, so the same page can show different snippets. It may use your meta description when it describes the page better than the content does, so write one that genuinely summarises the page.
What are Open Graph tags?
Open Graph tags tell platforms that support the protocol, such as Facebook where it was created, which title, description, image and address to show when someone shares your link. The Open Graph protocol lists og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url as the basic tags, with og:description as an optional one- to two-sentence summary.
Do I need X (Twitter) card tags as well?
The twitter:card tag chooses the card style on X, such as summary or summary_large_image. This tool adds it along with matching twitter:title, twitter:description and twitter:image tags, so the card has what it needs.
