How to Accept Mobile Money Payments on Your Website in Ghana

How to accept Mobile Money payments on your website in Ghana: choosing a gateway, how MoMo checkout works, the documents you need and security basics.

Published 7 min read

Key points

  • To accept Mobile Money on your website, sign up with a payment gateway and connect its checkout to your site.
  • Customers enter their MoMo number at checkout and approve the payment on their phone.
  • Gateways ask for identity and business documents; Paystack, for example, asks registered Ghanaian companies for a Certificate of Incorporation, Form 3 and a TIN.
  • Always confirm a payment on your server, through a verified webhook or API check, before releasing goods.
  • Using a hosted or redirect checkout keeps card data off your website and reduces your security burden.

To accept Mobile Money payments on your website in Ghana, sign up with a payment gateway that supports MoMo, such as Paystack, Hubtel, ExpressPay or Flutterwave. Complete its business verification, then connect its checkout to your website with a plugin or API. Customers enter their MoMo number at checkout and approve the payment on their phone. The gateway then pays the money out to your bank or merchant wallet.

This guide explains how the process works, what documents to prepare, how to compare providers and how to keep payments secure. It is written for business owners, so you will know what to ask your developer.

What is a payment gateway, and why do you need one?

A payment gateway is the service that sits between your website and the payment networks. It shows the customer a payment screen and sends the request to the mobile money network or card scheme. It also tells your website whether the payment succeeded.

You could, in theory, ask customers to send MoMo to a personal number and share a screenshot. That approach is slow, error-prone and easy to fake. A gateway gives you:

  • Automatic confirmation. Your site knows a payment succeeded without anyone checking a phone.
  • Several payment methods in one place. Most gateways accept MoMo and cards, and some offer other options.
  • Records and reconciliation. Every transaction has a reference you can match to an order.
  • Refunds and dispute handling through a dashboard rather than manual transfers.

Payment services in Ghana are regulated by the Bank of Ghana under the Payment Systems and Services Act, 2019 (Act 987). Hubtel and ExpressPay both appeared on the central bank’s published list of approved payment service providers in 2021. Licensing changes over time, so check a provider’s current status with the Bank of Ghana before you sign up.

How does Mobile Money checkout work on a website?

From the customer’s side, a typical MoMo checkout takes under a minute:

  1. The customer adds items to the cart and clicks Pay.
  2. They choose Mobile Money and their network: MTN, Telecel or AirtelTigo.
  3. They enter their MoMo phone number.
  4. A prompt appears on their phone, and they approve the payment, usually by entering their MoMo PIN.
  5. The gateway confirms the result and the customer returns to a thank-you page.

Behind the scenes, three more steps happen:

  • The gateway sends your server a notification, often called a webhook or callback, with the result.
  • Your server checks that notification and marks the order as paid.
  • The gateway settles the funds to your payout account on its published schedule.

Hosted, redirect or onsite checkout?

Gateways usually offer two styles of integration. Hubtel’s Online Checkout documentation, for example, describes Redirect Checkout, which sends customers to Hubtel’s site to pay. It also offers Onsite Checkout, which takes payment on your own website. The same page lists Mobile Money, credit and debit cards, GHQR and the Hubtel wallet as supported methods.

A redirect or pop-up checkout hosted by the gateway is quicker to build and keeps sensitive data off your server. An onsite checkout looks more seamless but needs more careful development.

Which payment gateways support MoMo in Ghana?

Several gateways serve Ghanaian businesses. The table below summarises points we could verify from official or published sources. Always confirm current features with the provider.

Gateway What we verified Good to know
Paystack Serves Ghanaian businesses as Starter (unregistered) or Registered accounts Starter accounts in Ghana have a GHS 30,000 collection limit
Hubtel Online Checkout supports Mobile Money, cards, GHQR and Hubtel wallet Offers both redirect and onsite checkout
ExpressPay Named on the Bank of Ghana’s 2021 list of approved payment service providers Ask for its current integration documentation
Flutterwave Provides Ghana mobile money in its developer documentation Docs advise re-verifying every transaction before giving value

If you use WordPress and WooCommerce, check that the gateway’s plugin is official or actively maintained. If your site is custom-built, your developer will integrate the gateway’s API directly. Our software development team handles this kind of integration for custom platforms.

What about fees?

Gateways charge a fee on each transaction, and rates differ by payment method and provider. We have not listed fees here because rates change and could not be confirmed on the day of writing. Check each provider’s official pricing page, and ask about settlement times and any charges for transfers or refunds.

What documents do you need to accept online payments?

Every gateway runs “know your customer” (KYC) checks before activating live payments. Requirements vary by provider and business type. Paystack’s Ghana compliance requirements give a useful picture of what to expect:

  • Starter (unregistered) businesses: a government-issued ID, a tax identification number (TIN), a personal bank account or MoMo number and the owner’s contact details. Paystack notes that all the information must belong to the same person.
  • Companies limited by shares: a Certificate of Incorporation, Form 3 and a TIN.
  • Companies limited by guarantee: a Certificate of Incorporation, Form 3B and a TIN.
  • Sole proprietorships: a Certificate of Registration.

Paystack’s guide to business types explains the trade-off. Starter businesses have a collection limit (GHS 30,000 in Ghana) and cannot use some features such as Transfers. Registered businesses have no collection limit.

Hubtel’s documentation says you need a Hubtel account to use its checkout. Expect similar checks from other providers.

Tips to speed up approval

  • Make sure the names on your ID, registration documents and bank or MoMo account match.
  • Have your website live with clear contact details, prices, refund policy and terms.
  • Keep your Ghana Card, TIN and registration certificates scanned and ready.

How do you keep online payments secure?

Payment security protects your customers and your business. These are the basics every site should follow.

Confirm payments on your server

Never mark an order as paid just because the customer reached the thank-you page. That page can be reached without paying. Instead, confirm the payment on your server. Flutterwave’s webhook documentation advises checking a secret hash on every webhook. It also says to “always re-query our API to verify the transaction details” before giving value. Check the status, amount, currency and reference against your own order.

Keep card data off your website

If you accept cards as well as MoMo, the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) applies. According to the PCI Security Standards Council, merchants may qualify for the simplest self-assessment, SAQ A, when they redirect to, or embed, a payment page from a PCI DSS-validated provider. That only applies when the entire payment page comes from that provider. Ask your gateway and acquirer which assessment applies to you.

Protect your accounts and website

  • Use HTTPS across your whole site.
  • Keep secret API keys on the server, never in website code or shared chats.
  • Turn on two-step verification for your gateway dashboard.
  • Limit dashboard access to staff who need it.
  • Keep your CMS, plugins and server software updated.
  • Watch for unusual refunds, payouts or changes to settlement accounts.

Frequently asked questions

Can I accept MoMo payments without a registered business?

Some gateways allow it. Paystack offers a Starter account for unregistered businesses in Ghana, with a collection limit. Registering your business removes that limit and makes you eligible for more features.

Which MoMo networks can customers pay with?

Most gateways serving Ghana support MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash and AirtelTigo Money. Confirm the exact list with your chosen provider.

How long does it take to set up?

Account approval depends on how quickly you provide complete documents. A plugin on an existing online shop can be fairly quick to connect, while a custom integration takes longer to build and test.

Can I accept international cards too?

Many gateways support card payments alongside MoMo, but international card support varies. Ask your provider which card types and currencies they accept for your account.
